3 Simple Ways to Transform a Room on a Budget
You’re looking to update your home, but you don’t have a lot of money. What do you do? If you have drab white walls or if haven’t updated the look of your home in over seven years, then there are several ways to enrich the look of your home without spending a lot of money. In this article, we will cover three of the most popular ways to accomplish this.
Transformation #1:
Drywall Textures: One of the easiest and most popular ways is by using designer’s tricks. You can retexture the ceilings and walls that make your walls look more modern, or you can add a new layer of hand-troweled compound that will make your walls look like plaster, and by combining methods your home will be totally your own.
You can also spray the compound onto your smooth wall, let it dry then paint over it for a distinctive original look.
Transformation #2:
Faux Painting: This style of painting is getting more and more popular. It is a way an artist can ad layers of paint to the wall, giving the wall a sort of movement look to it. This style of painting is more three-dimensional and it isn’t so flat and two-dimensional. I have even seen it look like plastered marble. It’s a really cool technique that isn’t cheap; as it is a labor of love, not just square footage and price! Faux Painting has become very popular amongst designers, as it is a way to give the client a totally unique look. You won’t be sampling paint chips at home Depot when you hire an expert Faux Painter. Their techniques may resemble wallpaper such as glazing, sponging, ragging, wood grain and even free hand designs.
Many illusions can be achieved with faux finishing such as texture that creates a three dimensional effect. Products that are applied in layers on walls, fireplaces and ceilings can make them look like real stone, crumbling masonry or even go so far as to resemble peeling paint for an old country look. Other finishes look like linen, grass cloth or denim. With a little practice your room could resemble a marble wall or even a cloudy day.
A suede finish will make your dining room appear warm and inviting. You may like that look so well you will even have it done in your office, den, or just a quiet place where you can work.
Transformation #3:
Non-traditional Wall Coverings: Wallpaper may be thought of as very traditional in the design world, but if you’ve seen the new designer wallpaper choices available today, they will amaze you! The new styles allow you to accomplish many looks that can be very unique to your room! There are many types of wall covering such as grass, cloth or cork. These are popular ways to change your room, hallway or entryway. If you do decide to choose wallpaper, be sure that you love it because it is much easier to repaint a room, than it is to remove old wallpaper and start over. But if you do have remove old wallpaper, you can do it the easy way or the hard way. The hard way…. Go to Home Depot and ask the guy what you need, buy a bunch of stuff, get home and bust your butt for half a day or more…… OR…. You can call the guy! Trust me… Call the guy! He has the right tools, equipment, proper water temperature and pressure etc… all the tools, all the experience etc… Trust me on this one…. If you can afford it… Call a PRO!
Foil is difficult to work with and it will show the imperfections in your wall, and it can get wrinkled and spoil the effect. The patterns on foil when properly installed can be uniquely different. However Tin on a ceiling is a really cool way to add texture and color to your ceiling and give it that unique feeling.
Cork of course is thicker, but in the right places it can be cozy, dark and even woodsy. Cork is usually installed in family rooms and offices.
Paper backed fabric is easier to install and it hides the defects in your walls because it is stiffer, but adds a finished look to your rooms.
As you choose the effect you want to achieve in transforming your rooms, don’t forget the ceilings. Whether you are removing the popcorn from the ceiling, adding metal, painting a mural, putting up wallpaper or simply painting it, make sure you don’t forget it, because there is nothing worse than a beautiful room and a terrible looking ceiling.
