Carpentry 101

Carpentry 101 designates a beginner, or an apprentice, in other words a person who is just learning the trade. If you are searching for a carpenter to do a specific job you will want someone who knows more than 101. The apprentice works for a greatly reduced amount for the pleasure of learning the craft from a skilled professional. In the building industry many start at the bottom as an apprentice and often are members of the carpenters union. The union advances the apprentice when his skills justify the advance. A skilled carpenter will be a benefit to the person hiring him, or in today’s world, her. There are many types of carpenters for instance, the person who builds furniture views his job as a craft, for he puts the finishing touches on the furniture he builds, and that can take hours to complete the job. He doesn’t even see himself as a carpenter. A person who builds homes and several story steel buildings is viewed as a carpenter, but you’d never ever compare the two as being in the same industry, and they aren’t. To complete one building, like a three bedroom home. If you hire a contractor to do the job, he may have several carpenters to work for him, all doing a different part of the job. To lay the foundation, they need a carpenter to build the frame around the slab. To frame the entire home would be another skilled person who would frame the outside windows and doors, including the inside doors. Once the frame of the house is completed, the plumbers and electricians do their thing; then there will be people to stucco the outside and others who specialize in hanging wall board on the inside. After the wall board, the floor is installed, then the moldings, trim and baseboards. The kitchen, bathroom cabinets, closets, and hardwood floors are installed by a carpenter. The person who installs the roof with tiles or shingles that make the roof waterproof may be listed as a carpenter, with a roofer designation. It’s possible for one person to do many of these jobs, and the person who knows all of the necessary skills will be a valued employee, or he may choose to be self employed. They all take skilled labor, and if you watch them work, they make the job look easy, but try to copy their work and you will find that you’re glad your skilled carpenter rose above the 101 training.
