Window Coverings – What you should know before installing

If there is one thing that I have installed in every home that I’ve owned, it’s window treatments. I’ve installed everything from inexpensive metal blinds, vertical blinds, to wooden horizontal blinds, to shutters, to curtains, to roman shades and draperies. My first experience with window treatments was awful. I was a young real estate agent and I was selling a townhome in Irvine Ca and we convinced the homeowner to paint, replace the carpet and put the blinds in the home, so that it would show better and sell fast. I went there and measured all the windows and sent off the dimensions to the window covering company and when the blinds came, nothing fit. I don’t think I understood the concept of measure twice, cut once… oops! So the company who installed the binds, had to re-measure and re-order the blinds… at my expense! Darn! My second experience with window treatments was for my townhome and that experience was much better. We installed custom draperies. Big, thick, long, beautiful custom drapes that hung from 14-foot ceilings to the floor! They were absolutely gorgeous and totally functional. Not only did the drapes do the job to block out the sunlight that was hitting my BIG SCREEN TV, but the draperies keep my home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. I did not know this would be an added benefit for getting draperies. My next experience with windows treatments was using horizontal wooden blinds. They offered a unique pallet of color; natural wood and wood stain blinds to help create a different look for your home. Custom touches such as rich stains, and designer finishes, decorative tapes, four different slat sizes and various valance options were available. We went with white and it worked out perfectly for our home. My next experience with windows treatments was a great experience. We had just sold our home and move to Oceanside, Ca. We found a great window treatment company in San Diego to customize all our draperies and roman shades. Everything fit perfectly, all the cords worked and we were very happy with the windows coverings we had installed in North County San Diego. Whenever installing draperies, shutters, blinds, roman shades or any other kind of windows treatments, I would highly recommend that you call a professional. Every time I hired someone to do it, it went perfectly. The one time I tried doing it myself, I ended up buying the blinds twice.
