Trusted Service Providers

Licensing – We confirm at the time of a Service Provider’s registration, that a prospective new Service Provider has all applicable required state-level trade licensing. We recommend members confirm these licensing requirements with the business and the applicable state and local licensing authorities. In some states, licensing may be required by the county or local authority in which the work is being performed. We recommend members confirm these licensing requirements before proceeding with a project. Larger projects often require the use of sub-contractors for specific types of work. For example, a kitchen remodel may also require an electrician or plumber. We recommend members verify that all the sub-contractors doing work on a project carry the appropriate licensing. Given the unique nature of California licensing, we rely on representations of Service Providers that are using a California general building contracting license to cover home improvement tasks, that such Service Providers are performing tasks as defined and required by California licensing rules. We always recommend that in addition to our efforts, members ask the business to provide a copy of their license.

Insurance – Where relevant, we confirm general liability and third party insurance coverage information presented by Service Providers in their profiles at the time of their registration with us. We confirm such coverage via the Service Provider’s insurance agent. We do not confirm general liability coverage for certain categories of Service Providers where such coverage is deemed not relevant, including but not limited to: Inspectors; Appraisers; Architects; Engineers; Consultants; Home Maintenance Services; Designers; Pre-Manufactured Cabinet Makers; Organizers; Permit Services; Disability Planners; Alarm System Monitors; Toxic Materials; Toxic Material Testing; Carpet and Fabric Cleaning, dyeing and protection; Rental Services; Appliance installation and repair; Fence installation and repair; Stone & Tile installation and repair; Plaster & Drywall work; Photographers; Caterers.

Bonded – For business types that require business to be bonded – we confirm that the Service Provider is bonded in the state in which it is located. This check applies to Service Providers that are corporations and Limited Liability Companies (LLC’s).

Consumer and trade references. We will ask for and check upon two recent (within the past 6 months) references from other business (trade reference); as well as, from consumers where a project has recently been completed (consumer reference).

Complaints – We check with the state license board for any consumer complaints that have been lodged.
